Instructions from designer Raffaele Ascione

The Ditto Fashion Design Project was set up to look at an area where methods for reproduction are the norm. When a designer creates a piece, they usually create a pattern so they can reproduce it for their collection. They start with a toile which is a mock version of the garment, and when they are satisfied with the look of this they then move on to making the finished version. It is quite normal for people to buy patterns in shops, however it is unlikely you will be able to buy a pattern for a designer piece. This part of the project is about testing this issue. What if the design for a designer piece was free? As with all of the other initial participants, the designer here was requested to contribute design for an imaginary garment. Have fun making your original!

Instructions by Raffaele Ascione

Raffaele Ascione is a German Italian designer and illustrator currently living in London.

1. Take two circles which will make the front and back of the garment. If you take the middle point of of circle your width should be 60cm going to the end of the circle.

2. You cut a 40cm curve at the top of the circles to create the neckline. Then from the neckline down leave 15cm for shoulderline. Then cut two more curves to create the armholes with the width of 30cm.

3. Cut another circle which should be 30cm width going from the middle point of it. And half this circle to create the sleeves.

4. The create a half circle which should have 40cm width on the straight line of it. This is the hood.

5. Then create the last circle which should have 30cm width going from the middle point right to the edge. The same size actually as the third point of this instruction.

6. The sew the shoulderlines together. Olive green lines on technical drawing.

6. The next step is to connect the sideseams with an open end 50cm zip. Pink lines on t.drawing.

7. The connect the hood to the back neckline with an open end 40cm zip. Green lines.

8. Then when all is connected cut a 40cm curve on the bottom of the back and connect the last circle with an open end 40cm zip. The circle ur connecting at the lower back is only connected with 40cm of the outer line of the circle.

Now have fun with taking it apart and creating new shapes . It’s about letting go from the past and already exhisting shape . . . don’t let it go around in circles create your own, you are allowed to use hooks and eyes to connect at different sides and ends.

P.S. Leave 1.5cm seam allowance on everything.use fabric which resembles a time in your life you want to finish with. . .to create the new, you can add any type of texture to it.
