Instructions from artist Mary Claire Kehoe
The Ditto Photography Project asked Mary Claire Kehoe to participate and she has contribute some comprehensive instructions for potentially creating one of her artworks. Mary Claire is a graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design and recently completed a MA in Fine Art with the University of the Arts in London.
25 EASY STEPS TO REPRODUCE AN ORIGINAL MARY CLAIRE KEHOE
1 Read the local newspaper
2 Record where the negative aspects of life are happening e.g. muggings, stabbings etc.
3 Get depressed and nihilistic
4 Have a fag/ drink
5 Convince a friend to accompany you to the place you’ve selected about 11 o clock at night.
Bring the following: a proper fancy digital camera, and a tripod, (both borrowed from college),
a phone with credit and house keys. That’s all, do not bring money.
6 Go to the area you’ve read about and researched, and try to capture how intimidated and generally
terrified you’re feeling.
7 Try to calm down your friend who’s having a freak out because they think you’re being followed.
8 Make sure you’re not.
9 Take a load of photos of the space. Try to make they as ambiguous as possible with lots of dark space
in the frame/ shot.
10 Go home.
11 Make your friend a cup of tea to say thanks for risking their lives for you.
12 Upload photos and flick through them, askin your friend for their opinion to humour them.
13 Go to bed.
14 Get up.
15 Start working in photoshop and putting photos together.
16 When you have found the 2 that you feel work best together, make them into 1 photo.
17 Make the canvas size approx 100cms wide and 30cms high.
18 The area in the centre needs to be really dark, so you can’t see where they’re joined.
19 Get printed 200cms x 62cms, or as close to that size as possible.
20 Mount it on diabond.
21 Lose money.
22 Don’t sell it.
23 Get depressed.
24 Return to your nihilistic ideal of human nature.
25 Move back to Ireland.
